Abtevrythng Quicktips: Resolving Amazon Appstore Region not Supported issue

Lot of comments were floating around that the method described in our post How to use Amazon Appstore Outside US is not working anymore. So in response to all those comments here is a Quicktip from team Abtevrythng to make you get that free app from Amazon Appstore.

Lot of people reported that the method described in our previous post used to work for them earlier but stopped to working for some reason. So this post is dedicated to all those who are facing similar issues and getting the most famous error from Amazon Appstore which says "Not available in your region".

Get Amazon Appstore working again - The Workaround
STEP 1: If you already have an Appstore ID which you were using to download apps previously jump to Step #2. If you are a new user and using Appstore for the first time, please follow the steps in our earlier post and if you get any error than come here and check out the next steps.
STEP 2: To make it work again, all you have to do is use Amazon Appstore on your PC/Mac to get the app. To do this simply open Amazon Appstore website on your PC/Mac using any US VPN and login with your credentials.
UPDATE: 16, October 2012

Make portable applications online for free

Ever wondered how to make portable applications? OR you already know how to make portable apps but want an easy way out to make them? Guess what! There is a solution available which allows you to make portable applications online and that too without the complexities involved in making one. Read on this post and learn how to go about portable app online!

For those of you who are wondering what portable apps actually are? These are standalone applications which does not require any installation to be performed on users machine. These apps are greatly popular now a days because one can carry his favorite apps in a USB device and can run those apps on any machine. Other than this the best feature which you can think of having portable apps is that you can run them without administrator permission on host machine. ( Using portable applications to run application without administrative privileges is just one way to use your favorite application on any device on which you do not have admin rights available. Please read Using (Installing) applications without Administrator privileges to know more about different tricks you can use to get your apps working with user only account on any machine.)

There are various tools/software available in the market today that allow users to make portable versions of their applications such as VMware Thinapp, MS App V etc. But all these tools have one thing in common. In order to make portable apps these tools require a clean machine - that is a machine with only operating system installed. And also require user to manually install the application so that the program can capture information related to the installation and create portable version for the installed application.

Kick in Cameyo
While thinapp and app-v software are not free! Cameyo comes free. It allows you to create portable applications or virtual applications that can run without the installation. But it also requires clean machine and user intervention.

Virtual Apps online
Thanks to the guys from Cameyo! they have come up with a new service 'Online Application Packager' which allows users to make portable applications online without the need of any clean machine and intervention (for most of the applications). So let us have a look on how to make your apps portable online for free.

Open Cameyo Online packager and create a free ID for yourself. Do the activation by clicking the link you receive in your email, and login to your account.
As soon as you sign-in  you will see the Portable app builder page. Here you have three options to select from in order to make your app portable.

  • First option is to search by name. For using this just write the application name for which you want the portable app.
  • Second option is to directly paste the download link (the url) of the application 'exe' or 'msi' file.
  • Third option is to select a file from your local machine and upload it in order to make a portable version for it.
After selecting your preference select the base environment for which you want the app that is 32 bit or 64 bit. Generally 32-bit will do. Now click on Submit button.

You'll now get a message screen displaying that your application will be ready in 10-20 mins. Just wait for some time, its faster than it says.

After sometime the page will refresh itself and you will get the download link for your portable application. That's it! just download the portable version of your app which is an 'exe' file and run it!

Did you find this article helpful? Why not share the word! Like us on Facebook and follow us on twitter to stay up to date with workarounds, tips and tricks!!!

Below are the Pros and Limitations of Cameyo online packager:
The Pros - Stuff we really liked!
  • The idea of online packager - no need to download and manually install the app
  • Make your own portable apps and be sure that they contain no viruses or hidden programs
  • Automatic emails which lets you know that your app is packaging and download links
  • The superfast response time
  • Free! Free! Free!
Limitations - Things the Cameyo guys can improve
  • The 30 MB file upload limitation - the online packager can only make portable applications for apps whose installers are less than 30 MB.
  • Only 6 apps a month - There is a 6 app per month per user limit

Mapping MIDI Controller like a pro - Advanced

In our previous posts we discussed about the MIDI signals that a controller sends to Traktor, basics of controllerism, and finding what signal is sent by which button, slider or knob. In this post we will be talking it to the next level which is mapping the buttons/knobs/sliders/jog wheels of our controllers to custom Traktor functions. To show this we will map Jog Wheels to control Traktor Effects section, touching jog wheels will turn on all the three effects in Traktor FX section and rotating them in either direction will control the amount of those effects.
This post assume that you have read, understood, and performed all the steps mentioned in our previous posts. If not we recommend you to go through the following first, before beginning the steps described here.
Adding New Mappings
  1. In Traktor click on File > Controller Manager. This will open up the Traktor prefrences window with controller manager options.
  2. Then click on the device tab and select the controller you want to configure from the list. Here the controller name is ‘Numark Mixtrack – General midi device’. Your list may vary depending upon your controller.
  3. As soon as you select your controller you will see some values in the ‘Assignment Table’. Below there will be a button ‘Add In’; click this button to add mappings to our table.
  4. You’ll see a list with different traktor actions. In that list go to FX Chained, a new list will open and in this list click on Effect 1 on.  effect 1 on
  5. As soon as you click ‘Effect 1 on’ option you will notice that a line is added in the ‘Assignment table’ with some default values. This is the field in which we will be doing our custom mappings.
  6. Now click on Learn button and touch your jog wheel on the top. Assignment table will be updated with the signal value. Now follow the same steps as above and add two more mappings for  ‘Effect 2 On’ and ‘Effect 3 On’.
Adding Modifiers
Now is the time to put the associated modifier values as well. this ensures that when scratch button is on we don't want our jog wheel to control effects. To do this we have to put the same modifier values that we previously had while deleting the original mappings.
  1. To add modifiers Click on the box with a down arrow next to ‘Modifier Conditions’ with ‘Modifier’ label on top, in the ‘Mapping details’ section. Now select the modifier from the list that pops up. In our case the value was M4=0 (we found this in our previous post), so click on M4 in the list to select it. Modifier values
  2. Since modifier value was 0 already we do not need to change the value, had it been something other than one we can change it by clicking on the down arrow under the label ‘Value’ in the Mapping details’ section. Similarly repeat this step for all our three newly added mappings. the final result will look something like this. left jog wheel complete
  3. Now continue the same steps for adding Effect 1, 2 and 3 On for the right jog wheel and their respective modifier values. But since right jog wheel will be controlling FX section 2 we need to set that in our mapping. To do this while adding the mappings Click down arrow next to the label Assignment in the ‘Mapping Details’ section, and select FX Unit 2 from the dropdown. selecting effect unit
  4. Please note that you have to select FX unit 2 for all the three Effects On assignments. Final mapping will look something like this. right jog wheel complete

Congratulations!!! You have successfully learned to add both the mappings as well as modifiers into your custom mappings. Till now we have done the mappings for making three effects on, on jog wheel touch function. Next step is to control the effects amount using Jog Wheel rotation. Please check out the concluding article Mapping MIDI Controller like a Pro Advanced Part 2.

Mapping MIDI controller like a pro - Basics

This is the second post in the Ean Golden’s NI S2 tricks applied onto Numark Mixtrack article series. It will show you how to map your existing midi controller just like Ean Golden’s breaking the silence video. You’ll not only learn just the mapping but how to actually achieve same sounds as Ean did. Later this series will contain articles on complete teardown of the sounds and effects used by Ean in the NI S2 demo video. Let us begin our first step toward ‘Controllerism’.
For the sake of this tutorial I will be using Numark mixtrack as my controller and Traktor Pro as the mixing machine. But the steps given in this tutorial are universally applicable for any midi controller. Please plug in your controller and fire up Traktor and then proceed with the given steps.
So lets take control of our controllers and step further into this art of controllerism! You could expect the following outcomes from this tutorial:
  • Resetting your controller’s mapping in case if you mis-mapped something.
  • Finding the MIDI signals your controller sends to Traktor.
  • Finding Modifier values which control multiple Traktor functions for single button.
  • Safely deleting your controller mappings in order to configure them for other Traktor functions.
    Setting the default mappings
If you’re using a controller that is Traktor ready, which means that it is pre mapped to work with Traktor and you have to simply plug it in to use. Then please set mappings to default using the controller manager setup wizard. (follow instructions given in STEP 1 of the article Ean Golden NI S2 tricks applied onto Numark Mixtack). Doing so will reset to default all the extra mappings you may have imported or have been using earlier. You also may want to export your existing mappings before resetting so that you can have them back if needed. If you have not used any custom mappings then don’t worry about this step and proceed further with the instructions.
Since we are trying to work upon Ean Golden’s tricks, we will be mapping jog wheels touch to turn on the effects and its rotation to control the amount of effects.

In order to breathe a new life to your controller we will delete some of the mappings first and then configure them again to work the way we want. Numark Mixtrack comes with touch sensitive jog wheels, which means it sends two different signals to Traktor, one when you touch the top surface of the wheel and other when you rotate the wheel using the sides. So lets configure the jog wheel to control effects.

    Kick in Controller Manager :
    1. In Traktor click on File > Controller Manager. This will open up the Traktor preferences window with controller manager options.  TraktorMappingReset
    2. Then click on the device tab and select the controller you want to configure from the list. Here the controller name is ‘Numark Mixtrack – General midi device’. Your list may vary depending upon your controller. Device Setup Select Numark Mixtrack
    3. As soon as you select your controller you will see some values in the ‘Assignment Table’. Don’t worry you don’t have to memorize anything here.Adding Effect On Hold
NOTE: Every button sends a unique MIDI signal to Traktor which is then configured in ‘Assignment Table’ to handle what action/function that button should do. In our case since the buttons we want to modify are already assigned to certain functions in Traktor, our first task is to find the signal and delete corresponding action.

    Finding MIDI signals:
    1. Let us find first what signal does our Jog wheel sends. To do this In the Control column of the Assignment table click on ‘X fader’. Now below in the Device Mapping section click on ‘Learn’ button.  Finding Jog Wheel Signal
    2. Now on your controller touch the left jog wheel and notice that the value under ‘Mapped to’ column changes to a new value. Now note down this value in a Notepad we will be using this in next steps. In our case this value is ‘Ch01.Note.F#5’. This is the value of the left jog wheel touch function.  Getting Jog wheel signal
    3. Now to get the value of jog wheel rotation, rotate the jog wheel this time. Notice the value in the ‘Mapped to’ column now changes. Keep a note of this value as well. In our case this value comes to ‘Ch01.CC.025’.  Jog Wheel rotation value
    4. Similarly follow steps number 5 and 6 to get the signal values for right Jog Wheel as well and note them down. In our case the two values are right jog wheel touch function ‘Ch01.Note.F5’ and right jog wheel rotation value is ‘Ch01.CC.024’.
    Deleting existing mappings:
    1. Now we know what signal our jog wheel sends to Traktor. Let us delete the existing mappings now. To do this, in the assignment table, click on the column name 'Control’, doing this will arrange all the mappings in alphabetical order.
    2. Now scroll this list and find the controls titles Jog Touch and Jog turn. You’ll find two Jog Touch instances and two Jog turn instances. These are for left and right jog wheels. Also notice the column titles ‘cond1’ which is short form for condition one. In this column there is some value listed such as ‘M4=0’, write this value somewhere in a notepad corresponding to action.  finding Jog turn and toch controls
    3. In our case for left jog wheel M4=0 and for right jog wheel M7=0.
    4. Let us delete these mappings to configure new ones. To do this select a mapping from the assignment table and hit the delete button below. Repeat this step and delete the mappings for Jog Touch and Jog Turn for both jog wheels.  find and delete jog wheel mapping

That’s it! Congratulations you’ve just cleared the existing mapping and stepped into the world of controllerism. Now we need to map these controls to other functions, follow the next post in the series - Mapping MIDI Controller like a pro Advanced to configure your controller.

Custom ROM Installation on HTC Hero part 2

This post is the concluding part of Custom ROM installation on HTC hero. Part one of this post presented Rooting, installing a recovery image, and backing up current ROM. In this we will be discussing how to install a Custom ROM onto your android and what things you must keep in mind while doing it and other prerequisites.
So without further ado, here is what we need to do...
Keep in mind the following points:
    • Make sure your battery level is more than 70%
    • Your phone is connected to internet via Wi-Fi (or 3G)
    • You copied the custom recovery image onto your SD card root folder
    • At least 300-400 MB free space exists on your SD card.
    1. Re-installing Recovery Image
Since we are dealing with HTC smartphones here, we are required to do this step again. Because with latest update system re-flashes stock recovery and do not let us boot to the custom recovery image. And because of this users get errors like the 'Red triangle' with exclamation mark screen while booting, OR there mobile just freezes, OR screen is stuck and buttons stop working. so in order to get rid of these errors we just need to re-install the custom recovery image again. To do this follow the steps given under the heading '2. Installing Custom Recovery'  in previous post and come here again after doing that.
    2. Installing Custom ROM
For installing Custom ROM, download the ROM file and copy it onto your SD card's root folder. It will be a zip file. Now open ROM Manager and select the option 'Install ROM from SD Card'. It will then open your SD card and you'll get a list of all the folders on your SD card. Scroll to the bottom and find the name of your custom ROM and tap onto it. You will get an option window. Select 'Wipe Data and Cache' and 'Wipe Davlik Cache' and tap the OK button. Your phone will now restart (it will take some time and re-boot a couple of times), wait for a while and phone will boot up with the custom ROM you just used.

That's it! Congratulations! You just flashed your Android device and installed a custom ROM on it! Please leave comments if you face any problems while working on this.

Custom ROM installation on HTC Hero Part 1

I re-rooted and re installed a custom ROM on my HTC hero last weekend, but things were not working out the way they should. Custom recovery was not booting, all that I was getting was a 'Red triangle with exclamation mark' and I was stuck at it. So if you're facing the same issues with your mobile while installing a custom ROM on it; then read on the following post on how to make things work and install a custom android ROM on your device.

Presented in two posts is a complete way to root and install a custom ROM onto your HTC Hero. I love HTC's Sense interface and didn't wanted to leave it so I installed SalsaSense ROM on it. It is a Android 2.3.3 ROM for HTC hero with HTC sense. I am using this rom but you can use any other ROM you want using the method mentioned below.
UPDATE: Part 2 of this article is complete and up! Read the concluding part at 'Custom ROM Installation on HTC Hero Part 2'

    1. Rooting your android
In order to install a custom ROM you first need root access on your mobile. Root access means access to read-only files and folders on your android systems. Unlike any other methods you must have read about rooting, the rooting process I am talking about is pretty simple. You just need to download and install and app and then it will root your android at the click of a button. For rooting your android device follow the rooting process given at Access and download us and other market apps on your android. Remember that in Step 4 uncheck 'Soft Root' option and then click root. so that you have full control of the phone which is required for installing another rom.

    2. Installing a recovery
Recovery is actually a program that allows you to make modifications to your device. Using recovery images you can backup and restore your existing system. In this steps too there are no technicalities involved. Open Android Market, search for 'Rom Manager' and download the ROM manager application which is the first result. Now follow these steps in exact same order in order to save yourself from getting an error screen (with exclamation mark) on reboot.
Please note that in order to successfully install custom ROM, please connect your mobile to internet using WI-FI (or 3G data) as far as possible. This is because we will be downloading data going forward.

Open Rom Manager, click Menu button and tap on 'Settings'.
In the ROM Manager settings screen, check the option Quick backup and restore. Hit back button to save the settings and get back to the ROM manager main screen.

Now tap on the first option, that is Flash ClockworkMod Recovery. As soon as you tap you will see the bar on the top with application name will change to download progress bar. You'll get a prompt for confirming your device, just click on it to continue. The mobile will now download the recovery image. After the download gets finished you'll get a notification displaying 'Successfully installed ClockworkMod Recovery'. Click OK to continue.

    3. Backing up current ROM
You'll be back on main screen now. Scroll down to the backup and restore category and tap on the option 'Backup current rom'. System will then prompt you to choose a name for this backup, type the name you want and tap ok to continue. You'll now get a second prompt saying that your phone will reboot into recovery form making backup, just tap okay.

After this you'll see your phone booting up but a little different this time. Stay back and relax, the system boots into recovery and saves the existing states of the phone. You can also see the progress on the screen. In 15-20 minutes the process will finish and your phone will boot up again.

Now it will boot up normally. Congratulations! You just rooted your phone and made a backup of your current system. Stay tuned, In the Part 2 of this article we will continue with custom ROM installation onto your htc hero.
