Google Chrome OS VHD

Yes, You read it right! VHD for all people that want to run Google’s latest innovation – The Chrome OS.

(Experience free call to US and Canada visit How to use Gmail Call features outside US)

I have been looking for its ISO image, or something other that can work with Virtual PC. (I am a Microsoft Technology Guy). But after searching almost everything I found no information or downloads available for Chrome OS VHD. So, I kept trying on with workarounds and finally got it to work. So here is a how to get going with Chrome OS on Virtual PC.

STEP ONE: Go to http://gdgt.com/google/chrome-os/download/ and download the Chrome OS image. You’ll have to register to download this image or if you have a Facebook ID you can login using that ID too. Once you get to download page just download the image file which is a zip file around ~320 MB. This zip file contains the .vmdk file which you can run using VirtualBox or VMware Player. (Virtual PC does not support this format.) After downloading just extract the .vmdk file from the zip archive.

STEP TWO: Go to http://3d2f.com/programs/87-675-winimage-download.shtml and download WinImage. (~724 KB only). Once the setup downloads you can install it on your system without admin rights! :) Now after the installation run WinImage. Then go to ‘Convert Virtual Hard Disk image’ option under Disk category as shown in the image below.

Convert VHD

Now this will open a File Open Dialogue Box, just select the extracted .vmdk file and click Open. You’ll get following Window asking to create fixed size VHD or Dynamically expanding VHD. Select the one you need and hit OK.

Convert VHD from VMDK

Just wait for the process to complete and you’ll get a VHD that you can use it using Virtual PC.

Now create a virtual machine using this VHD and boot it up. when you get the login screen just enter your Gmail ID and password to begin.

NOTE: For some reasons when Google Chrome OS boots up  you may get an error saying “ Network not connected and offline login failed”. In such a case just use Username: chronos@gmail.com and Password: chronos ; This will make the system start. (Please add a comment if you were able to solve this problem)

Following is a screenshot of Google Chrome OS running on Virtual PC 2007 on my machine.

How to create web based portable applications

(DISCLAIMER: Following article is for information purposes only.)

(You can also download a PDF version of this tutorial.)

(Experience free call to US and Canada visit How to use Gmail Call features outside US)

Web based portable applications are applications which can run directly from internet without the need of any installation procedures or administrator privileges. (It’s Application streaming actually! Google it for finding out the technical details)

Now if you have already read my following two previous posts you must have got an idea of what I am going to cover in this tutorial. If you have not read those, I recommend you to please take some time and have a look at ‘em.

Okay, let us begin now…

What all you will need? (These is not prerequisites and you can also directly jump to the steps)

  • Clean PC – Clean Virtual Machine (No software installed)

A good tutorial with screenshots is available at Geek to Live: Run Windows XP inside Vista with Virtual PC http://lifehacker.com/238071/geek-to-live--run-windows-xp-inside-vista-with-virtual-pc

STEP 1. Install Spoon Plug-in

Go to http://spoon.net/Start/?a=SpoonAppStudio , if your machine does not have plug-in installed you’ll notice the image there saying install the plug-in. (Do not worry this plug-in installs without admin rights.)

 image

Click on Install Plugin, a download window will appear, click on save to save this file on your machine. (File size is ~ 2.72 Mb). After download is finished, run the downloaded file by double clicking on it and the Spoon Plug-in gets installed automatically.

(NOTE: If you are using Firefox you may get a warning that browser needs to get restarted in order to finish the plug-in installation, Click Ok to restart your browser)

image

STEP 2. Spoon Application Studio

Once you are done with the Plug-in installation, go to http://spoon.net/Start/?a=SpoonAppStudio . Now click the Start button to start the application.

image

STEP 3. Using Spoon Application Studio for creating Portable Applications

If you want to get a detailed description please download the Spoon Application Studio Guide (PDF Version) http://www.spoon.net/AppStudio/Spoon%20App%20Studio%20User%20Guide.pdf or have a look at its online version. http://www.spoon.net/AppStudio/Docs/webframe.html

After the buffering is complete the App manager will load and gets open in a new window

image

In the wizard click “Virtualize a third party component” you will get to the next step that is Capturing the before snapshot. Read the instructions if you want to then click Next button to begin the capturing process.

image

After you click the Next button, Capturing process starts. It takes a while around 5-7 minutes to complete this “before” snapshot. Following is the progress window shown when this process is going on.

image

After the ‘Before Snapshot’ is complete, minimize the Spoon Application Manager window and proceed with the installation of the application you want to virtualize. Here in this case let us take example of ‘Rocket Dock’ which a windows application providing dock like Apple Mac for Windows Operating Systems.

image

Proceed with the normal installation procedure, as you do for any application.

After finishing the installation, maximize the Spoon Application Manager’s window and Click Next.

image

Clicking ‘Next’ will trigger the ‘After Snapshot’ capture process. It will once again give you the progress window as show below.

image

After the ‘After Snapshot’ capture process gets finished, you will be presented with ‘Select Startup file’ dialogue box. Here in this step all you have to do is select the executable file which is the entry point for your program. In simple words it the exe file which runs when you double click on application icon.

image

As mentioned in the above mentioned window, just select the ‘Exe’ of the application you just installed. (You can also select multiple files by pressing Ctrl key).

You will then be presented by ‘Select Output file’ dialogue box, Click next and select a folder to save the output file. The output file is nothing but the Configuration settings made by the Spoon Applications Manager.

image

Give the name you want to give for your program and Click Save.

image

Finally you’ll be presented with the last configuration dialogue box.

image

Uncheck the checkmark in ‘Run the Virtual Application now’ and click Finish. This will save the virtual application configuration and build the virtual application for you. A new window will open showing the progress, as shown below.

Once this is finished, Click ‘ok’ to complete the process and now your Virtual Application is ready to be published.

image

STEP 4. Publishing the Virtual Application

In this step, I will talk about how to publish your virtual applications online and post it on your blog or website, so that anyone can access and use those applications.

After you click Finish in the earlier step, you’ll be on the main page of Spoon Application Manager Studio. Here click on the rightmost button, which is ‘Publish to web’.

image

You’ll be presented with the spoon login dialogue.

image

Enter you ID and Password in this and hit ‘Ok’.

You’ll then get to the following window

image

In this window, you can enter information about your program, such as name of the application, its version, domain, description etc. Since we already build the virtual application, there is no need to check Rebuild App option, just directly click ‘Publish’ button.

image

As soon as you hit publish, file upload dialogue box opens. What this will do is take the application data from your machine and upload it to Spoon’s Server Space. It will take time depending upon the size of your program and the connection speed. But it’s worth waiting you know. :)

Once the application gets uploaded you’ll get the following screen.

image

Click ‘Manage’ which will open your browser with Spoon’s login page.

STEP 5. Making Application available over internet for free!

As soon as you click Manage the following page opens.

image

Type in your credentials and click ‘Continue’.

This will open you published application page, which contains list of applications you have created and published using Spoon, if this is your first application you’ll only get only one in the list. It will look like the following

image

Click on the Application Name, which will open the application details page.

image

Scroll to the bottom of this page and you’ll see Applications HTML code and other details about your application.

image

Now click on the Profile button. (Actually profiling is running your applications couple of times in order to construct its model of your application)

You will get to page which looks like other hosted applications already hosted on Spoon.

image

Wow, your application is available with Start button, just like other applications available on Spoon’s website. Click on the Start button and application buffers and starts.

image

image

(UPDATE: The People from Spoon read this entry and fixed their code, so the following workaround does not work anymore. I am working on some other workaround and will update it once I find it. Please leave a comment if you want to help me with this)

However you can still create Virtual Applications as presented above and can use anywhere in the world by Logging into Spoon with your ID.

(Experience free call to US and Canada visit How to use Gmail Call features outside US)

STEP 6. Publishing these applications on your blog or Website

You were required to enter your username and password to run this application, and the HTML code provide by the website does not work because you have not paid anything to Spoon. So, how to actually make your applications available over internet?

Now, here comes the fun part. Let us see a workaround which allows us to publish these applications to our sites and blogs…

Login to Spoon, Select the application you want to publish, Click on its name which will open the applications details page, scroll to the bottom and click on the ‘Profile’ button. (Please look at the screenshots of the above steps)

Now on the Application page (The one with Start button on it)

image

Click ‘View’ in the browser menu bar and select ‘Page Source’ in Firefox and Page -> View Source in Internet Explorer 8.

image

Just look at the source code and find code that looks like the following

image

Copy this code! This is the actual code that you require. Now using this code you can share your application with the world.

Simply use this JavaScript code wherever you wish to publish your application, and all this without spending a dime!

Have fun Experiencing the Power!

Creating web hosted portable applications for FREE!

Yes you read it correct… For free…!

Disclaimer: Please note that this article is for information purposes only. Please use this method only for testing purposes. If you want to use full capabilities, please purchase the services.

(Tired of using trial versions? read http://abtevrythng.blogspot.com/2009/05/using-sandboxie-to-bypass-trial-version.html for finding ways to bypass those limitations)

(Want to Install/Use your favorite applications but do not have administrator privileges to do that… Then please read http://abtevrythng.blogspot.com/2009/08/using-installing-applications-without.html for a workaround)

Now you can create your own portable applications and host them for free. I have read different blogs and different discussions for creating portable applications but there was no option available for hosting them. Thanks to the power of Application Virtualization (Application Streaming actually) which lets you create applications that are published on internet and can run anywhere without installation and without need of admin privileges.

You must have read my earlier blog post: Power of Application Virtualization (if not please have a look at it). This entry is in continuation of it. From the moment I used Spoon based applications, I too wanted to get my hands dirty and create one application for my use. Spoon.Net allowed me to create portable application for me, but those poor guys need money for publishing those applications using their server.

However I tested and tried some workarounds and finally found a way out to give the world free portable applications that run instantly from your web site, with no install.

Try the following application which I’ve made:

(UPDTAE: Somehow people from Spoon read my blog and discovered the flaw they had in their Application Delivery, Now you can create the Application but cannot publish onto your Blog or Website, So the below mentioned application wont actually work, but stay tuned while I work in resolving this and finding another way out of this problem) Just leave a comment if you want to help me in discovering a workaround!

Stay tuned, I’ll include how I made this possible in my coming posts…

Power of Application Virtualization

There is this site http://spoon.net/ which offers free virtualized applications over the internet, free of cost. Nothing is installed on your machine so no administrator privileges are required to use these applications.

On their website they say “Spoon delivers your apps instantly to any Windows desktop,
with no downloads, installs, or hassles. It lets you create web-hosted versions of your existing Windows apps that run instantly from your web site, with no install. Spoon's unique, integrated app virtualization and delivery engine allows most apps to launch after transferring less than 10% of the app content, and completely eliminates installation and dependencies such as the AIR, JRE, Silverlight, and .NET runtimes.”

I did some digging in Wikipedia’s Application Streaming section and to my surprise there was no entry for this website, I have added one but don’t know if it gets removed due to their policies.

Anyways coming back to Spoon, when I first visited the website, on Browser Sandbox page, along with the applications screenshots there was an option to install a plug-in ( ~ 2.7 MB, runs without administrator rights). After installing the plug-in, the browser restarted and I got the option to run those applications.

Just have a look at the following video and you’ll know about the power of Application Virtualization.

Using (Installing) applications without Administrator privileges

(Tired of using trial versions? read http://abtevrythng.blogspot.com/2009/05/using-sandboxie-to-bypass-trial-version.html for finding ways to bypass those limitations)

(Experience free call to US and Canada visit How to use Gmail Call features outside US)

Following article is for information purposes only!

Okay, so you are stuck!

You really wanna use this application but lack of administrator privileges doesn’t let you install and use your favorite program… Too bad isn’t it?

Well, following are some ways using which you can now use your favorite applications (without installing!) without Administrator privileges.

WAY ZERO – Just install ‘em

Well, trying always helps! Just download the executable setup and try to install it in a folder you have access/rights/permissions to. For example try to install them in My Documents, or My Pictures folder rather that C:\Program Files. Some program place dll’s in System 32 folder and they will give you an error indicating cannot write to ___ folder, try ignore button if available, sometimes this trick really works.

WAY ONE – Portable Applications

Yes, the first thing you should do (That’s why I titled it as Way One ), search for a portable version of the application. Just go to Google and add the word ‘portable’ in your query. You’ll get many sites that provide portable applications for you to download and use.

Example: Suppose you want to install “Application XYZ” just open Google and search for “Application XYZ portable” or “Portable Application XYZ”.

It’s simple and the best way to get your favorite applications running on your machine. You can try following sites:

UPDATE: Try http://www.spoon.net , This website offers applications which can run from the internet directly without the need of any installation or Admin rights. Also read my latest blog entry ‘How to make your own web hosted applications’ Free!

WAY TWO – Universal Extractor

Universal Extractor is a program that does exactly what it says: extract files from any type of archive. And of course, it’s free to use… The best part is you do not need to install it. Just download the archive from UniExtract Binary Archive (4.84 MB) which contains the binaries. Visit http://legroom.net/software/uniextract for downloading in other languages and find information regarding how to use it.

Using Universal Extractor you can extract all the files from the setup archive and then you can run the main program EXE. Please note that this does not work for all programs but still you can try if it works with your favorite applications.

WAY THREE – Other ways

Well if none of the above worked for you, maybe you could search for an alternative application that does the same thing what you want, or you can make your own portable applications by using vmware ThinApp or other techniques available. Just do some Googling and you will find different methods.

Just leave a comment or any information you wanna share etc… I’d be happy to expand on this further.

Application Virtualization – Take One

Application Virtualization is a software technology that creates software or service isolation on top of the base operating system through a special virtualization layer. The advantage with Application Virtualization is that it completely protects the base operating system from any changes that applications make in the process of installation(be it registry changes, dll modifications, services created etc.). That is because when a virtualized application is prepared, the installation process is not captured; instead, the running state of the application or whatever is required to make the application functional on a base operating system is captured.

image

Application Virtualization Technologies

Basically there are two types of methods used for creating virtualized applications; agent based and agent less.

Agent based virtualization

This type of virtualization is done using streaming technologies. It removes the need for installation of any application locally but the Application virtualization agent (client) needs to be installed on the client machines. All installed application data is stored permanently on the virtual application server. Whichever software is needed is either streamed or locally cached from the application server on demand and run locally. Examples of software that are based on this approach are:

Agentless Application Virtualization

This type of application virtualization also allows zero installation on client machines. What this actually does is that it virtualizes resources such as environment variables, files and Registry keys, thus presenting application with virtual environment which is a combined view of the underlying physical and virtual resources. This virtualization layer causes application to run as it would normally run. Beauty of this type of virtualization is that no agent (client) installation is required on the base machine in order to execute applications created with this technology. Once any application is virtualized it can then be used on different operating systems or different machines, making the application truly mobile. Examples of software based on this type of approach are:

  • VMware ThinApp encapsulates applications from the OS and each other, eliminating costly regression testing and conflicts from badly behaving applications. Just plug in an .msi or .exe file to deploy a virtual system environment, including registry keys, Dynamic Link Libraries (DLLs), third-party libraries, and frameworks, without requiring any installation of agents or applications on the underlying operating system. For more information, see www.vmware.com/products/thinapp/?hl=en&rlz=&q=thinapp&meta
  • InstallFree Bridge provides a clientless platform that creates a transparent “bridge” between virtual applications and the OS, protecting the OS from any application changes. For more information, see www.installfree.com/pageload.aspx?page=products_bridge.html

Using Sandboxie to bypass Trial version limitations in software

Disclaimer: Please note that this article is for information purposes only. Please use this method only for testing purposes. If you want to use full capabilities of software after the trial period, please purchase ‘em.

UPDATE (Want to use your favourite applications without Administrator rights… read my latest blog post Web Hosted Applications to find out more ways to run your applications without admin privileges)

(Want to Install/Use your favorite applications but do not have administrator privileges to do that… Then please read http://abtevrythng.blogspot.com/2009/08/using-installing-applications-without.html for a workaround)

(Experience free call to US and Canada visit How to use Gmail Call features outside US)

Many times we use software that are bound to be used only for limited period, trial versions are available which let users use fully functional software on trial basis for a limited period of time (like 15 days trial) OR in some cases trial versions come with limited functionality. This method can be used for fully functional days bound trial versions. Using this will enable use of these time bound period over and over again. This can be done using a simple 500KB (Approximately) application called as “Sandboxie”.

According to the its website Sandboxie lets you run your programs in an isolated space which prevents them from making permanent changes to other programs and data in your computer. Under the supervision of Sandboxie, an application operates normally and at full speed, but can't effect permanent changes to your computer. Instead, the changes are effected only in the sandbox. Wow! isn't that great. So if you wanna go ahead and use it do go through the FAQ section here.

Here I am going to show you with an example on how to use it for bypassing time bound trial version software limitations. I used Mediatwins AC3 tools pro which offers a free 15 days, fully functional trial version to test and try its functionality. After 15 days it doesn't allow you to use it unless you enter a valid registration key. Uninstalling and Reinstalling also does not work after your 15 days are over.  Lets see how it works:

STEP 1: Open Sandboxie Control, Click on the Sandbox option, then hover your mouse to DefaultBox –> Run SandBoxed and then click on Run Any Program.

SandBoxie Control Box

STEP 2: This will open up a new option window which will allow you to run any exe file sandboxed. Click on Browse button to select the application you want to run. And then select the exe of the trial software you want to run. In our case we select the ac3tools_install.exe that is the installer for AC3 Tools Pro.

Open File Dialouge

Selcting exe

STEP 3: Click Open button and installation begins. Proceed with the installation steps as you normally do while installing any application.

Click Next > button

Click Finish

STEP 4: As soon as you hit Finish, the application starts running. It presents you with the normal trial mode window. Just click on Continue trial button to proceed.

Continue Trial

STEP 5: Notice the [#] marks in the Title bar of the running application window. These marks tells that the application is running Sandboxed and no changes have been done to your system.

Sandboxed Application Running

STEP 6: Now if we navigate through the File and Folder in the Sandboxie Control Window we can see what all files and folders this installation have made changes or created new. Also notice the RegHive under the User Files section. Actually this is where the trial version store the encrypted settings which doesn't allow us to run them after the limited time period is over.

File and Folder List

STEP 7:  Now go ahead and use the software to its full and after you’re done, Exit the program and Click Sandbox –> DefaultBox and click Delete Contents.

Deleting Contents

STEP 8: This will open up a new window and delete all the files created, Press the Delete Sandbox button to fully clear the contents.Deleting Sandbox

STEP 9: If you now open your programs menu you will notice that there has been no change. :)

(Experience free call to US and Canada visit How to use Gmail Call features outside US)

Using this method you can run any time bound application again and again without worrying about  the time period limitation. I’d also like to let you know some known issues that I came across while working with Sandboxie. One is that sometimes it fails if we run heavy applications – I ran Firefox 3.0 with many add-ons  and it failed when the RAM usage was around 750 Megs. Maybe this one is due to my metal configuration but anyways this is wht i found. Another thing is that, If you have already installed trial version on base machine and its time period was over, now if you try to install it again using Sandboxie it will not run. This is due to the fact that the Program already made entries in the Windows Registry Hive which is used by Sandboxie when it loads the application.
